Sustainable Materials in Traditional Crafts: Kingfisher Feather Case Study

Abstract
Traditional craftsmanship is a vital cultural asset, embodying exquisite techniques and deep cultural significance. Many traditional crafts historically relied on animal-based materials, but with advancements in technology and the rise of sustainability, alternative materials are now being explored. This study focuses on Kingfisher Feather Art, experimenting with material innovation to replace animal-based materials and expand the potential for sustainable development in contemporary craft practices.
Kingfisher Feather Art traditionally uses kingfisher feathers affixed to a metal base for decoration. However, due to material scarcity and ethical concerns, its development has been restricted. This study proposes rayon thread as a sustainable, non-animal alternative, evaluating its color vibrancy, texture, and alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The research follows three phases:
Literature Review – Analyzing the core elements and techniques of Kingfisher Feather Art.
Material Experimentation – Testing alternative materials and refining techniques.
Survey Analysis – Conducting a 195-participant survey to assess public acceptance of sustainable materials in traditional crafts.
Findings confirm rayon’s feasibility as a substitute while highlighting public support for sustainability in crafts, though some prefer traditional materials. This study provides a case study on integrating sustainability into intangible cultural heritage, promoting material innovation and cultural preservation.
