Taiwan Craftsmanship Awards Ceremony: Paying Tribute to the Heart of Craftsmen with One Craft and One Art

The National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Center under the Ministry of Culture held the "Taiwan Craft Awards Ceremony" today (29th) at the National Taiwan Center for Arts Education, an annual classic event that brings together important awards for Taiwan crafts. The most coveted "National Crafts Achievement Award" was presented by Wang Shisi, Deputy Minister of Culture, to this year's winner, Artist Chen Jinglin, in recognition of his long-term efforts and contributions in the field of fiber dyeing and weaving. The ceremony invited performance groups such as Fantu Art, Tianchuang Sand Painting and Taiwan Bamboo Orchestra to describe the three exciting steps of the craft process: "Rooted in the Land", "Excellent in Skills" and "Built for Sustainability", creating a craft feast experience that is shared by generations.


Distinguished guests attending the award ceremony today included former National Palace Museum Director Lin Zhengyi, Taiwan Institute of Design Director Chang Chi-yi, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Foundation CEO Ma Zhenhua, Chinese Culture Association Vice President Jiang Chunnan, National Crafts Achievement Award winners Chen Sanhuo and Shi Zhenyang, and national treasure Liu Qianshao.


Wang Shih-si, Deputy Minister of Culture, said that he was honored to participate in such a grand awards ceremony on behalf of the Ministry of Culture. This year, for the first time, three awards were presented together in one ceremony, aiming to build a complete Taiwan craft ecosystem. In addition to recognizing the Taiwan Craft Award, which represents the highest honor of Taiwan's craft achievements and presents the craft talent ecosystem, and the brand that certifies Taiwan's craft, these awards will allow Taiwan's craft to shine on the international stage, whether in terms of craft design creativity, cross-border cooperation, cultural heritage, or international exchanges and cooperation.


Wang Shishi paid special tribute to this year's National Crafts Achievement Award winner, Artist Chen Jinglin, and pointed out that the National Crafts Achievement Award symbolizes comprehensive contributions in the fields of creation, talent cultivation, and cross-border cooperation. He hopes that these achievements will become a model for future generations of Taiwanese craftsmen, allowing more people to identify with themselves and enrich the nourishment of Taiwanese culture, thereby enhancing the foundation of Taiwanese culture. Taiwanese crafts represent the noble skills of craftsmen, the connection and accumulation of culture, and he hopes that they can be conveyed to everyone, so that everyone can be proud of Taiwanese craftsmanship, and he also pays the highest respect to all the winners.


In his speech, the 2024 National Crafts Achievement Award winner, artist Chen Jinglin, said that he has been engaged in the field of dyeing and weaving for more than 40 years. He thanked the Ministry of Culture and the Crafts Center for their long-term efforts in promoting Taiwanese crafts, as well as all the predecessors and seniors who have supported and encouraged him to embark on the road of craft creation, so that he has the opportunity to work hard in the field of dyeing and weaving and be recognized. Out of gratitude, he gave back what he learned to more Taiwanese craftsmen and persisted in the path of craft inheritance. Chen Jinglin also sang a self-composed poem on the spot, describing the scenery of Formosa, Taiwan and the beauty of the colors of the sky, hoping to lead more students to love the field of dyeing and weaving and engage in craft creation.


Lin Qinghe, founder of Tianxing Kiln and representative of the Taiwan Craft Award Collaboration Award, pointed out that over the years, he has actively built Jiji Town, Nantou County into a pottery town. In addition to highlighting the characteristics of Taiwan's craftsmanship, he hopes that more people will participate in the craft field and jointly promote the craft town to let Taiwan's crafts shine. You Jiaping, the first prize winner of the Taiwan Craft Award Creative Award Craft Art Group, said in her speech that she hopes more people can directly experience the cultural elements and story background behind the creation through their senses. , hoping that more people will pay attention to Taiwanese crafts and let the many hands behind the crafts be seen; Kang Yiqian, the first prize winner of the Craft Design Group of the Creativity Award, said that handmade crafts can also become fine products. She uses bamboo handbags made from bamboo, a special raw material of Taiwanese crafts, to speak for Taiwanese bamboo and reflect more diverse bamboo appearances. She thanked the craftsmen who worked together to create, and thanked the Craft Center for its long-term active promotion of talent training, which gave her the opportunity to learn about craftsmanship and grow and be recognized. Xiquan, a representative of Taiwan Green Craft Certified Manufacturers, thanked the Craft Center for its active promotion, which allowed this generation to be exposed to more craft fields, and also thanked everyone who has contributed to various fields of Taiwanese crafts.


Director of the Craft Center, Chen Dianli, said that this year is the 70th anniversary of the Craft Center. The related celebration activities have been carried out since the beginning of the year, and the "Taiwan Craft Awards Ceremony" is the climax of the anniversary activities. The overall event advocates the practice of the spirit of Taiwan's craftsmanship with the theme of "Live Craftsmanship. Craftsmanship Lives", hoping to draw a perfect end to the 70th milestone of craftsmanship. The "Taiwan Craft Awards Ceremony" is a joint "National Craftsmanship Achievement Award", "Taiwan Craftsmanship Award" and "Taiwan Green Craftsmanship Certification" and other three major competitions. By gathering the strength of the craftsmen of different generations, they can learn from each other and enhance their creative energy. The theme of this year's ceremony is "One Craft, One Art" to pay tribute to Taiwan's craftsmen. All the crafts and arts from the beautiful island of Taiwan, each craft represents the original intention of a craftsman to create and the true attitude of "choosing one thing and sticking to it for a lifetime". They are unique and clearly identifiable, shouldering the mission of carrying forward the historical culture and skill inheritance, and never stop.


The winner of the "National Crafts Achievement Award" is artist Chen Jinglin. Chen Jinglin is a well-known dyeing and weaving craftsman who is proficient in dyeing and weaving techniques. His early creations include brocade paintings, reliefs and free-standing sculptures. Later, he devoted himself to the research and promotion of natural dyes and dyeing techniques. His series of classic works are characterized by caring for nature and showing the charm of Taiwan's land. The award is presented to recognize his achievements and selfless dedication in the field of fiber dyeing and weaving over the years, including creation, research, skill inheritance, cross-domain cooperation, and international exchanges.


The "Taiwan Craft Award" aims to reward creativity and set up a "Collaboration Award" as a ring support, with the goal of building a support system for the cultivation of craft talents and a sound ecosystem for Taiwan's craft industry. A total of 414 entries participated in the competition, and 58 Creation Award works and 5 Collaboration Award cases were selected. Among them, the "Creation Award" is divided into the "Craft Art Group" and the "Craft Design Group". The first prize winners are You Jiaping's metalwork creation "Reincarnation I" and Kang Yiqian's "Six Thoughts on Bamboo Art", which accurately and perfectly demonstrate the unique concept of the work and the development possibility with quantitative production and market sales potential. Winners of the "Collaboration Award" include the "Tainan Bamboo Association", "Kaohsiung Baolai Cultural Association", "Red Glaze Co., Ltd.", ceramic artist Lin Qinghe and flower weaving artist Lin Peiying. They have all been committed to revitalizing the value of traditional crafts for a long time, allowing small and specialized crafts to be transformed into more people actively involved, and forming a benchmark of collaborative spirit for a virtuous economic cycle and cultural feedback.


"Taiwan Green Craft" encourages craft brands to enter the industrial market through a "certification" system. With "Green Living Crafts. Good Products" as the brand spirit, it selects crafts that are both aesthetic and practical, with a sense of touch and warmth, and are marketable and closer to customer needs. A total of 50 sets of works from 47 brands were selected, covering a variety of life aspects, including home furnishings, food supplies, personal wear and quality stationery. The selected works are included in the "Taiwan Craft Catalog" and recommended to the public, hoping to discover the beauty of tools in daily life and improve the quality of life.
